چکیده

We present a detailed study of the magnetic structure and spin waves in the Fe jarosite compound KFe3(SO4)2(OH)6 for the most general Hamiltonian involving oneand two-spin interactions which are allowed by symmetry. We compare the calculated spin-wave spectrum with the recent neutron scattering data of Matan et al. for various model Hamiltonians which include, in addition to isotropic Heisenberg exchange interactions between nearest (J1) and next-nearest (J2) neighbors, single-ion anisotropy and DzyaloshinskiiMoriya (DM) interactions. We concluded that DM interactions are the dominant anisotropic interaction, which not only fits all the splittings in the spin-wave spectrum but also reproduces the small canting of the spins out of the Kagomé plane. A brief discussion of how representation theory restricts the allowed magnetic structure is also given.

Polarized neutron scattering studies of the kagomé lattice antiferromagnet KFe3(OH)6(SO4)2

We report polarized neutron scattering studies of spin-wave excitations and spin fluctuations in the S=5/2 kagomé lattice antiferromagnet KFe3(OH)6(SO4)2 (jarosite). Inelastic polarized neutron scattering measurements at 10 K on a single crystal sample reveal two spin gaps, associated with in-plane and out-of-plane excitations. The polarization analysis of quasi-elastic scattering at 67 K shows...

Magnetic ordering and fluctuation in kagomé lattice antiferromagnets , Fe and Cr jarosites

Jarosite family compounds, KFe3(OH)6(SO4)2, (abbreviate Fe jarosite), and KCr3(OH)6(SO4)2, (Cr jarosite), are typical examples of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagomé lattice and have been investigated by means of magnetization and NMR experiments. The susceptibility of Cr jarosite deviates from Curie-Weiss law due to the short-range spin correlation below about 150K and shows the magne...

A study on the dissolution rates of K-Cr(VI)-jarosites: kinetic analysis and implications

BACKGROUND The presence of natural and industrial jarosite type-compounds in the environment could have important implications in the mobility of potentially toxic elements such as lead, mercury, arsenic, chromium, among others. Understanding the dissolution reactions of jarosite-type compounds is notably important for an environmental assessment (for water and soil), since some of these elemen...

Spin waves in the frustrated kagomé lattice antiferromagnet KFe3(OH)6(SO4)2.

The spin wave excitations of the S=5/2 kagomé lattice antiferromagnet KFe3(OH)6(SO4)2 have been measured using high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering. We directly observe a flat mode which corresponds to a lifted "zero energy mode," verifying a fundamental prediction for the kagomé lattice. A simple Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian provides an excellent fit to our spin wave data. The antisymme...

Characterization of Arsenate-for-sulfate Substitution in Synthetic Jarosite Using X-ray Diffraction and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

Arsenic-bearing synthetic jarosite [KFe3(SO4)2(OH)6] was characterized to elucidate the form of the arsenic. The XANES spectra indicate that the As occurs exclusively as As5+, nominally as AsO4, consistent with the valence state of the arsenic in the reagents used for the syntheses. X-ray-diffraction analyses show that at least 9.9 wt.% AsO4 can be structurally incorporated in the jarosite. Cel...
